Barter Street - Low Level City-crawling in the City State
I need to get this out of my head before it strangles me.
Thanks to FelineAvian for beginning this obsession.
- Takes place in the City State of the Invincible Overlord
- Holme Alone/Baker Street style, level 3 max. non-monstrous NPCs are demoted to levels 1-3.
- Uses chainmail instead of d&d for combat, but not rolling damage as advised in od&d. Hits kill or drain a level if you are higher than level 1. 2 simultaneous hits needed to kill a level 2 fighter, 3 for 3, etc.
- NOTE: This does mean that only a level 3 fighter could approach fighting a truly supernatural foe, since they can fight as Hero-1. Something like an ogre could be ganged up on using troop or man-to-man rules, but a dragon could not.
- Advancement is either loot-based like normal or a mix of XP is what you wear + defeats of foes that people know about. Not sure how to reckon this with level drain, maybe it's just a malus on your xp total. Everyone knows you got got.
- Guilds, societies, and such stolen from Leaves Upon the Wind, mapped onto orgs in the City.
- Probably will use the martial/esoteric technique system too, advancing HD also advances your Fighting Capability. This must be very rare or it's no fun.
- Spell-casting is either directly taken from Leaves Upon the Wind, an adaption of the rules in Grey Elf's Conan supplement, or just Holmes. Unsure.
- Use pretty much everything in the City as is, except for making gender less weird. God I want to find a use for the women tables
- The game is the city, the city is the game.
- Hour-long weekly online open-table sessions in the gay OSR server. Probably no downtime or shopping handled outside of the sessions to start, outside of outfitting your adventurer at character creation, partially due to overloading me with work and partially due to the city being The Dungeon. Not sure how this will feel in play.
